Google steps up fight against barrage of 'bad' ads

SAN FRANCISCO — Google yanked 59% more "bad" advertisements from its online systems last year as the world's largest Internet search provider stepped up a battle against a barrage of counterfeiters, suspect downloads and other malicious activity on the Web.

Google removed more than 350 million bad ads in 2013, up from about 220 million the year before. That's almost 1 million suspect ads a day. The increase was partly driven by the overall surge in online advertising, most of which is legitimate. But as Google introduces new products, scammers adapt and develop new ways to game the system.

"It's a challenge," says Mike Hochberg, ads engineering director who oversees hundreds of engineers and policy experts who focus on this at the company. "Google continues to add new types of ads and formats all the time, and that creates new work to track down new ways of creating bad ads."

Google's online ad business has become so lucrative, generating billions of dollars a year in profit for itself and its partners, that the company's platforms, such as AdWords and AdSense, are a huge draw for what it calls "bad actors" looking to grab some of this money.

In 2011, Google agreed to pay $500 million to settle allegations by the U.S. Department of Justice that ads for Canadian online pharmacies contributed to the illegal importation of prescription drugs. Last year, Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood said Google was still allowing ads for illegal online pharmacies that sell dangerous or counterfeit drugs without a prescription.

Google published a scorecard on its constant battle against such activity for the first time in early 2013, and the company is releasing the second report on Friday.

Hochberg says the reports and Google's increased efforts to limit bad ads and online scams were not related to the counterfeiting settlement.

Top China Stocks To Watch For 2015

"Ensuring that we a! re serving good ads for users has been part of our ad programs from day one," he says. "Last year, we decided to put out a pseudo scorecard of what we have been doing."

The latest report suggests Google is making progress. The number of advertisers Google disabled dropped from more than 850,000 in 2012 to slightly more than 270,000 in 2013.

"We attribute this decline to many scammers — counterfeiters, for example — being thwarted by our security efforts," Hochberg says.

Google banned slightly more than 14,000 advertisers for trying to sell counterfeit goods in 2013, a decline of more than 80% compared with 2012. Again, Hochberg put that down to Google's increased efforts to stop such activity.

The volume of complaints about ads hawking counterfeit products dropped by 85% in 2012 and by another 78% in 2013, and attempts to market counterfeit goods decreased by 47% in 2012, and 82% in 2013, according to Google.

"This activity peaked somewhere toward end of 2011 and early 2012," Hochberg says.

While ads for counterfeit goods have been on the decline recently, there has been an increase in other questionable activities, including artificially inflating the number of clicks on ads, showing ads on websites with violent or pornographic content and downloads that install toolbars and other software that interfere with browsing by inserting ads unexpectedly.

Google took aim at toolbar downloads in particular last year. The company tightened policies, requiring that such software be pre-approved by the company, be installed on only one browser at a time, can be uninstalled with one click and provide clear disclosure on what is being installed and what changes are being made to a user's devices.

By the end of 2013, Google had blacklisted more than 200,000 publisher sites in its ad network and removed more than 250,000 publisher accounts for violations such as artificially inflating clicks and impressions or including ads on sites with violent content.

Goog! le disapp! roved more than 3 million applications to join its ad networks in 2013. That number may be mind-boggling to some, but Hochberg notes a chunk of these applications were probably from the same entities re-applying multiple times.

"The great majority of ads are good," he says. "My team's job is to keep a lid on the bad stuff."

"Bad" ads accounted for less than 1% of the total in 2013, he noted, while declining to be more specific. Google has cut this percentage rate by about half each year since 2011, he says.

Dollar up v.s. Aussie on China PMI, Eurozone eyed

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- The dollar jumped against the Australian dollar on Thursday, after the preliminary reading of China's manufacturing data from HSBC disappointed investors and sent most Asian equities into dive, while the euro advanced ahead of upcoming Eurozone flash PMI reports.

Earlier in the day, the HSBC/Markit "flash" version of its monthly China's Purchasing Mangers' Index (PMI) fell to the lowest level in seven months -- to 48.3 in February.

The results dragged most Asian stocks into the red, as Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index (HK:HSI)   fell 1.2%, South Korea's KOSPI index (KR:SEU)   lost 0.6%, and China's Shanghai Composite (CN:SHCOMP)   dropped 0.2%.

The Australian dollar (AUDUSD)  took a big hit from the downbeat China data, falling to 89.64 U.S. cents from 90.04 U.S. cents late Wednesday. The currency is often sensitive to data from China, which is the biggest export market for Australia.

Against the Japanese yen, the U.S. dollar (USDJPY) declined to ¥101.81 from ¥102.32 late Wednesday. Japan's trade deficit widened more than expected to ¥2.79 trillion ($27.2 billion) in January, compared to December's ¥1.30 trillion, data showed on Thursday. The Nikkei index (JP:NIK)   sank 2.2% to close at 14,449.18.

Meanwhile, the ICE dollar index (DXY)  , which tracks the U.S. unit against six other currencies, declined to 80.09 from 80.191 late Wednesday. The WSJ Dollar index (XX:BUXX)  , an alternate gauge of the greenback's strength against a broader basket of rival currencies, also dropped to 73.56 from 73.62.

Elsewhere, the euro (EURUSD)   strengthened versus the dollar, trading at $1.3743 from $1.3733 late Wednesday, as markets closely watch the euro-zone flash PMI data from Markit due later in the day. The index was forecast to rise to 54.2 in February, compared to 54.0 in January, according to a poll of economists by Fact Research.

"While the euro-zone economy has been recovering slowly, growth has been uneven," said Kathy Lien, Managing Director for New York-based BK Asset Management in a recent note, "if the Flash PMIs surprise to the downside, indicating a slowdown in euro-zone economic activity, we could easily see EUR/USD drop back below 1.37."

In other foreign exchange trading, the British pound (GBPUSD)  moved a little lower to $1.6675, compared to $1.6681 late Wednesday.

Ignore Earnings Slips at Bed, Bath and Beyond

After the closing bell on Wednesday, Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) released a disappointing earnings report. For the third quarter (Sep-Oct-Nov), the home furnishings company earned $1.12 per share. That was three cents below Wall Street's forecast.

BedBathAndBeyondLogoPreviously, the company had said they expected Q3 to range between $1.11 and $1.16 per share. So technically, BBBY hit their own guidance, but the Street was expecting more (and so was I). Net sales rose 6% from last year's third quarter. Comparable store sales, which is a key metric for retailers, rose by 1.3%. Honestly, that's not that great. So far this year, BBBY has earned $3.20 per share for the first three quarters, and that's a nice increase over the $2.89 per share from the same period last year.

But the bad news is that BBBY cut their Q4 guidance. I was afraid this might happen. The previous range was $1.70 – $1.77 per share. Now it's $1.60 – $1.67 per share, so 10 cents at both ends. That lowers their full-year range from $4.88 – $5.01 per share to $4.79 – $4.86 per share. I had been expecting the company to clear $5 per share for the year. For some context, last year, BBBY earned $4.56 per share.

Top High Tech Stocks To Watch Right Now

Thursday was ugly. The stock got crushed for a 12.5% loss. I know this is painful and I apologize for the volatility, but traders aren't always so rational. In fact, this kind of thing has happened to BBBY before. Eighteen months ago, BBBY got hammered for a one-day loss of 17%. What happened? They had actually beaten expectations but lowered their quarterly and full-year guidance.

The odd thing is that once those results were known, many months later, they really weren't that far off from Wall Street's original estimate. Before the June 2012 plunge, Wall Street had expected full-year earnings of $4.63 per share, and as I had mentioned before, they earned $4.56 per share last year. So the market panicked with a 17% drop in response to (what turned out to be) an earnings adjustment of less than 2%. Not surprisingly, the aftermath of the sell-off was a great buying opportunity. This is exactly why we like high-quality stocks.

Now let's break down some of the numbers. For Q3, Bed Bath & Beyond's EPS grew by 8.7% while their sales rose by 6%. Of that sales increase, 78% came from comp store sales and 2% came from new stores. BBBY's gross margins fell a bit due to inventory acquisition costs, shoppers using more and larger coupons and a shift towards lower margin goods. Expenses for selling, general and administrative dropped a bit partially thanks to lower payroll costs.

There are also a few technical points. Bed Bath & Beyond doesn't use three-month quarters; they use 13-week quarters. Since one year isn't exactly 52 weeks, every so often, they have to use a 14-week quarter. Last year's fourth quarter was a 14-weeker so the comparisons aren't quite apples to apples. Also, the date range isn't the same either (this is important because it covers the important holiday shopping season).

For Q4, BBBY sees comp store sales rising by 2% to 4%, instead of the earlier projection of 3.5% to 5.5%. Net sales are expected to fall by -3.9% to -5.7%. Again, that's with one less week of sales. The company estimates that adjusting for the missing week, Q4 sales growth will range from -0.3% to +1.6%.

Bed Bath & Beyond didn't have a lot to say about the coming fiscal year, but they did say they anticipate opening 30 stores next year. They also continue to have a very strong balance sheet. I expect more details in April when the Q4 report comes out.

Here's my take on Bed, Bath and Beyond Stock:

This is where our locked-and-sealed strategy comes to the test. Lots of investors would dump BBBY at the first sign of trouble, but I'm not doing that. This is a very well-run outfit that really had a fairly minor adjustment to their earnings outlook. The shares are going for a bit over 14 times this year's earnings. Sure, the one-day plunge ain't a lot of fun, but that's how the stock market works. The long-run is still in our favor and I'm sticking with BBBY.

Top 5 Media Companies For 2014

Bloomberg

Investors from Bank Julius Baer & Co. to Pictet Asset Management predict emerging-market assets will extend gains after Lawrence Summers pulled out of contention to be the next Federal Reserve chairman.

The former Treasury Secretary would have reined in Fed stimulus faster than Janet Yellen, his main rival to replace Ben S. Bernanke, according to a Bloomberg Global Poll last week. The central bank's monthly bond-buying program, which fueled demand for higher-yielding assets worldwide, will probably be cut to $75 billion from $85 billion at a review this week, according to the median estimate of economists surveyed Sept. 6 by Bloomberg.

“The stage is being set for emerging markets to do better and the Summers thing, in the short term, can provide some boost,” said Stefan Hofer, an economist at Bank Julius Baer & Co., which oversees $406 billion of client assets globally. Asia offers the best prospects as there is the added benefit of an improving Chinese economy, he said.

Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg via Getty Images They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So, Comcast (CMCSA), consider yourself flattered, because Time Warner Cable (TWC) is copying off your homework. A couple of weeks ago, we told you about Comcast's "Great New Secret Cable Plan" to try to halt the exodus of subscribers from its services. The Comcast plan allows subscribers to sign up for: A menu of 45 or so of the most-watched, most useful cable channels The premium pay-TV channel HBO -- plus included HBO GO service for mobile devices High-speed Internet access at speeds up to 25 Mbps A subscription to XFINITY Streampix, Comcast's service for streaming video of complete seasons of popular television shows from recent years past... ... all for the low, low price of just $40 or $50 a month (depending on location). The plan was "secret" because Comcast didn't make much of an effort -- or really effort -- to publicize it. There's hardly even a mention of the plan on the company's website. In other words, it seems like Comcast would prefer to keep the new plan hush-hush so you continue paying for one of their more expensive bundles. However, word of Comcast's under-the-radar new plan get out -- nearly 5,500 DailyFinance readers printed, emailed, commented on, Tweeted, or Facebooked our story on Comcast's "Internet Plus" bundle last month. So Comcast competitor Time Warner did what any good competitor does: It copied the model and, this week, began offering a similar plan of its own: Dubbed "Starter TV with HBO," Time Warner's plan is an even more slimmed-down version of Comcast's idea. It features: "20+" cable channels, including the five biggies -- ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and PBS HBO and HBO GO and... well, actually, that's about it. At $30 a month, Time Warner handily undercuts Comcast's Internet Plus offer on price. And yet, it's hard not to wonder if customers aren't still overpaying. For one thing, Time Warner's Starter TV with HBO offer

Although a big acquisition raised awareness of Gannett's businesses outside the struggling newspaper industry, it's still unclear how much of a boost it will produce for Gannett earnings growth in the future.

  • [By Mike Deane]

Early on Monday morning, Gannett (GCI) had its price target raised to $35 from $34 at FBR Capital. The ratings company also affirmed that Gannett is a “Top Pick.”

Gannett, a publishing and broadcasting company that operates in the U.S. and the U.K., currently has a price of $29.76, and FBR’s new target suggests an 18% upside.

FBR analyst William Bird had the following comments about GCI’s PT raise: “Based on our analysis, we estimate that Gannett’s spectrum is worth approximately $2.2 billion, or $9 per share, roughly doubling in value from theacquisitionof BLC (i.e., pre-deal valuation of ~$1.1 billion). Separately, we are lowering our 2014 EPS estimate by $0.07 to reflect the previously announced sale of three stations to MDP (note: an expected midyear close means that the stations will not be in operating results from January 1, but the proceeds will not be received until midyear). We are increasing our price target to $35 from $34 to reflect shareholder accretion from the sale. We like Gannett’s improving business mix, growth profile, and ability to drive growth with its own propeller through higher retrans, synergies, and potential TV acquisitions.”

Gannett stock was inactive in pre-market trading. So far this year, the company’s stock is up 0.61%.

That will almost certainly be used in Liberty’s pursuit of Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE: TWC). Liberty holds about a27% stake in Charter Communications Inc. Theme Parks and Overseas Expansion

Walt Disney Co. undoubtedly has a talent for monetizing its characters and franchises across multiple platforms, but its theme parks are the crown jewel. These are an especially attractive and unique segment in the company assets, mainly because they are almost impossible to replicate. The Parks and Resorts division accounts for 25% of operating profits and after the 2009 crisis, revenues have been recovering at a fast pace. During the last quarter of 2013, revenue in this segment experienced an 8.5% increase, while operating income marked a 15% rise. In fact, the company is focused on further deploying its capital towards the expansion of the Parks and Resorts business, thereby creating new growth opportunities.

Looking forward, Walt Disney Co. is aiming to expand its operations overseas, in the emerging nations China, Russia and India. The Shanghai Disney Resort, for example, will contain a Shanghai Disneyland, two themed hotels and a retail, dining and entertainment venue, and is set to be China largest theme park by 2015. Despite possible unfavourable foreign currency translations, this firm should be able to sustain its growth given its multiple revenue sources. Furthermore, the entertainment giant has been highly successful at managing its cash flow, returning large sums of its free cash to shareholders via dividends and share repurchases. The 71.3 million repurchased shares in fiscal 2013, worth close to $4.1 billion, are expected to increase in 2014 and will range between $6 and $8 billion in returns.

As the niche cable network provider in the media industry, Discovery flagship channel addresses topics like science, technology, history and exploration. With TLC, Animal Planet and Discovery as the three key domestic channels, the company reaches 100 million households, and despite the mature U.S. market, sales have grown 6% and revenue 10% in fiscal 2013. This is mainly due to the media giant unique content programming and line-up refreshments. Hit shows like Shark Week, for example, have become so popular through advertising that the network experienced in 2013 its all-time best viewership with over 50 million viewing rates during one episode. 3 Stocks Under $10 Making Big Moves

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- At Stockpickr, we track daily portfolios of stocks that are the biggest percentage gainers and the biggest percentage losers.

>>5 Stocks Set to Soar on Bullish Earnings

Stocks that are making large moves like these are favorites among short-term traders because they can jump into these names and try to capture some of that massive volatility. Stocks that are making big-percentage moves either up or down are usually in play because their sector is becoming attractive or they have a major fundamental catalyst such as a recent earnings release. Sometimes stocks making big moves have been hit with an analyst upgrade or an analyst downgrade.

Regardless of the reason behind it, when a stock makes a large-percentage move, it is often just the start of a new major trend -- a trend that can lead to huge profits. If you time your trade correctly, combining technical indicators with fundamental trends, discipline and sound money management, you will be well on your way to investment success.

>>5 Rocket Stocks to Buy for a Market Bounce

With that in mind, let's take a closer look at a several stocks under $10 that are making large moves to the upside.

Net 1 Ueps Technologies

Net 1 Ueps Technologies (UEPS) provides payment solutions and transaction processing services for various industries in South Africa, Korea, Europe and internationally. This stock closed up 4% to $9.88 in Tuesday's trading session.

52-Week Range: $5.38-$13.00

Thursday's Volume: 140,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 179,776

From a technical perspective, UEPS trended sharply higher here right off $9.50 with lighter-than-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of UEPS within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if UEPS manages to take out Tuesday's high of $9.92 to some more near-term overhead resistance at $10.19 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in UEPS as long as it's trending above $9.50 or above its 200-day at $9.07 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 179,776 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then UEPS will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap-down-day zone from last November that started just above $11.50.

Gevo

Gevo (GEVO), a renewable chemicals and biofuels company, focuses on the development and commercialization of alternatives to petroleum-based products based on isobutanol produced from renewable feedstocks. This stock closed up 0.01% to $1.32 in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $1.27-$1.34

52-Week Range: $1.12-$2.75

Tuesday's Volume: 441,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 1.54 million

From a technical perspective, GEVO trended modestly higher here right above some near-term support at $1.26 with lighter-than-average volume. This stock recently formed a triple bottom chart pattern at $1.25, $1.20 and $1.26. Shares of GEVO are now starting to trend higher off those support levels and it's quickly moving within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if GEVO manages to take out its 50-day at $1.37 to more near-term resistance at $1.46 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GEVO as long as it's trending above $1.26 or $1.20 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 1.54 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then GEVO will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap-down-day zone from last December that started just above $1.70.

Synthesis Energy Systems

Tuesday's Range: $1.18-$1.30

52-Week Range: $0.60-$1.49

Tuesday's Volume: 643,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 282,994

From a technical perspective, SYMX spiked notably higher here with above-average volume. This move briefly pushed shares of SYMX into breakout territory, since the stock flirted with some near-term overhead resistance at $1.27 to $1.30. Shares of SYMX closed just below those levels at $1.21. Market players should now look for a continuation move higher in the short-term if SYMX manages to take out Tuesday's high of $1.31 to its 52-week high at $1.49 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SYMX as long as it's trending above Tuesday's low of $1.18 or above more support at $1.10 and then once it sustains a move or close above $1.31 to $1.49 with volume that hits near or above 282,994 shares. If we get that move soon, then SYMX will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory above $1.49, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.88 to $2, or $2.20.

Extended Warranties: For Most, They're a Waste of Money

Top Blue Chip Stocks To Own Right Now

mobilephone splashed into waterGetty Images Extended warranties are everywhere. It seems like every retailer is offering them now, even for purchases as small as a $30 toaster oven. And according to research done by Protect Your Bubble, a third-party gadget insurer, 40 percent of U.S. buyers are taking those stores up on the offers. Sales of extended warranties have seen between 15 percent and 20 percent annual growth over the past 3 years. And there's good reason for retailers to push them: Extended warranties are mostly just a high-margin upsell for the companies that provide them. And in almost every case, they are a bad deal for consumers. Why Extended Warranties Get Such a Bad Rap Extended warranties are a form of insurance -- which makes them, at bottom, nothing more than a bet against "the house." "Insurance companies [and extended warranties] only make money if the company collects more money than it pays out," says Professor Bruce Clark of Northeastern University's D'Amore-McKim School of Business. Companies that offer insurance and extended warranties have teams of actuaries who calculate the odds that a consumer will file a claim. And the odds aren't in our favor. It's this entirely accurate impression that we're gambling in a rigged game to buy them that gives extended warranties their bad rap. It's hard to visualize the benefits until you use any form of insurance, and even when you have it, you hope to never need to use it. A Good Buy for Klutzy People Whether or not you should consider extended warranties might be better based on the type of person you are than the types of products you're buying. Are you klutzy? Prone to breaking things? Do you have unusual usage habits for your gear? Then extended warranties may actually be a good fit for you. "A friend of mine bought smartphones for himself and his teenage son, but he only bought the insurance for his son," says Clark. Think about it in the context of your car, for example, he suggests. "If you are an unusually heavy user, for example, driving twice as much as the average person, then an extended warranty based on time [not miles] may make sense." Most of us aren't klutzes, and the way we use our technology is fairly close to the norm. That makes us the type of consumers companies want to sell extended warranties, to because we're unlikely to make claims. When Even You Should Buy a Warranty While it doesn't make financial sense to buy an extended warranty or insurance on a $30 toaster, are there other purchases where it is actually a good idea? "We advise consumers to consider: 'What would my life be like not having this device and what would the cost if I wanted to replace that particular unit be?' " says Stephen Ebbett, president of ProtectYourBubble.com. "So if your TV was to break outside of the manufacturer's warranty, that could be a $3,000 bill or more." Ebbett also recommended that consumers think about what it would be like to be without a critical item or gadget in their life. For example, if you were to loose or break your smartphone, what would that be like? The obvious items that you may want to buy an extended warranty for are laptops, smart phones, and tablets. You may also want to consider an extended warranty for an expensive camera like a digital SLR. How to Avoid Falling for the Extended Warranty Trap One of the best moves you can make is to say "no" at the register when a cashier offers you an extended warranty. But there are a few things you can do if you're nervous about an item breaking. First, review the existing manufacturer's warranty. You may be able to file most claims directly through the manufacturer if you have any issues with an item. It pays to understand the coverage that comes with most products -- its limits, exclusions, and when the coverage expires. Manufacturer's warranties cover most repairs that you might need. You should also understand that many manufacturers' warranties cover you through the expected useful life of that item. If it breaks, that's most likely an indication that the product wasn't built to last much longer anyway, and you simply need a new one. "Just about all manufacturers warranty their purchases for a certain length of time (most do so for the first year) and many credit cards will extend that warranty. In some cases, they double it," says David Bakke, writer from the popular blog Money Crashers. "A few instances where it might make sense to purchase an extended warranty are for used automobiles and older homes. For all other purchases, invest in a quality brand name and you also lessen the chance that your item will break down." If you feel like you to buy an extended warranty, shop around for the best deals. Don't get trapped in thinking that you have to buy the warranty where you buy the gadget. You may find a better deal -- more coverage, fewer restrictions, faster returns, and better service -- from a third-party insurer. Consider Self-Insuring Your Purchases You can also consider self-insuring your purchase. If you are worried about how you'd pay to repair or replace a specific broken item, each month, set aside a small fraction of its cost in a savings account. That will give you a fair amount of assurance that you when it comes time to replace it, you'll be in a good position to do so. And you never need to worry about having wasted your money if it outlasts your self-warranty. For example, if you're buying a brand new refrigerator, look up the expected life span of that model online. Typically, people need to replace refrigerators every 10 years. So, if a refrigerator costs $2,000 and you are worried about it breaking, set aside $17 a month. And, in 10 years, you'll have enough saved for a new one. Of course, this is a simplistic example, but it gives you an idea of how to think of self-insuring your purchases instead of buying an extended warranty for them. Most consumers should skip extended warranties almost all the time. Even when they seem relatively cheap, they're rarely worth the money, because the odds are you won't use them.

Investors cheer record-setting year on Wall St.

Stock investors will soon be in 401(k) heaven.

The broad U.S. stock market put an exclamation point on its record-breaking year on the final trading day of 2013, powering to yet another all-time high and posting its biggest percentage gain since 1997, or 16 years ago.

"Good to the last drop," is the way Dwayne Adams, a certified financial planner at Adams Wealth Management Group, summed up the best year for the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index since 1997. The closely tracked benchmark index rose 29.6%, a mega-move that will be reflected in much fatter retirement account balances when investors rip open their statements in coming weeks.

RAGING BULL: Nothing could stop red-hot stocks in 2013

2014 OUTLOOK: Will it be another slam dunk for stocks?

TOP PICKS: Investment strategists share their stock picks for 2014

The superlative returns posted by all of the nation's best-known indexes tell the story of a stock market in full-blown bull market mode, as the bull nears its fifth birthday in March. Blue-chip stocks skyrocketed in 2013. So did large-cap names. Small-company stocks posted big gains, too. As did tech stocks, which partied like it was 1999.

Stocks surged on the back of an improving economy, unprecedented stimulus from the Federal Reserve and a knack for dodging possible sinkholes. The stock market sidestepped the "fiscal cliff" at the start of the year, the Boston Marathon bombings, a near war with Syria, a government shutdown and a jump in yields on long-term government bonds to their highest level since July 2011. Wall Street also made peace with the Federal Reserve's decision to begin dialing back its market-friendly stimulus in the new year.

Performance statistics tell the story best.

• The Dow Jones industrial average finished the year up 26.5%, its best return since 1995. It closed the year out with its 52nd record close of the year, rising 72.37 points to 16,576.66. That pushed the bull market to an even more notable milestone: At! Tuesday's close the Dow is more than 10,000 points above its 2009 bear market low -- 10,030 points, to be exact.

LOSERS: Dow's worst performing stocks of 2013

• The S&P 500 soared nearly 30%, its best performance since a 31.01% jump in 1997. The large-company index also closed out the year with a fresh record, only the sixth time that has happened in its history, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices. It posted 45 record closes, the most in 15 years.

S&P 500: Winners and losers of 2013

* The tech-dominated Nasdaq composite was the biggest winner in 2013, racking up a gain of 38.3%, its seventh-biggest annual gain ever and its best since 2009 when it rebounded sharply from its bear-market low.

• The small-cap Russell 2000 also posted a 30%-plus gain and finished at a new record high. For the year, it skyrocketed 37%, marking its best annual return since 2003.

"2013 was a great year," says Gary Alexander of the Navellier mutual fund family. "The year was far better than most pundits thought possible last January."

Hot Airline Stocks To Own Right Now

By Hal M. Bundrick

NEW YORK (MainStreet) -- It is the rise of Obamacare-ageddon. Businesses are already cutting workers' hours and trimming payrolls as the greatly debated and highly anticipated Affordable Care Act becomes a reality October 1. State health care insurance exchanges will open and employers will be required to notify their workforces of available options. Nearly 12 million Americans that don't currently have health insurance will have three months to make a decision or pay a penalty. Let the havoc begin.

"Many, but by no means all, uninsured individuals are American adults under the age of 30, who mostly enjoy the robust good health that comes with youth," says Eleanor Blayney, consumer advocate for the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. "Medical costs, let alone health insurance, are often pretty low on their list of financial concerns. Facing the choice to get insurance or pay a penalty, they may resort to simple math and conclude that $95 is a lot more affordable than the $3,000 or $4,000 that is currently being estimated as the cost of the lowest level of insurance coverage available on the state exchanges."

Last but not the least is US Airways Group (LCC), in which Y/Cap slightly increased its position, now owning around $7.9 million. U.S. Airways is currently on the minds of many investors, mainly due to its plans to merge with American Airlines parent AMR Corp (AAMRQ.PK). While European regulators approved the merger, the U.S. Department of Justice put a spoke in the wheel, and is trying to block the move. The companies filed a motion to the court to set the trial date for November 12. Amid these actions, U.S. Airways and American Airlines prolonged the outside date at which one of the companies can terminate the proposed merger.

Synopsis: As a result of the terms of its bankruptcy and the proposed merger with U.S. Airways (LCC), an equity investment in AMR Corp (AAMRQ.PK) is equivalent to a series of derivatives on LCC. Lynne Sladky/AP WASHINGTON -- U.S. airlines scored their second best performance last year in the more than two decades that researchers have been measuring airline quality, with Virgin America the leader, says an annual report released Monday. The report ranked the 14 largest U.S. airlines based on on-time arrivals, mishandled bags, consumer complaints and passengers who were bought tickets but were turned away because flights were over booked. Airline performance in 2012 was the second highest in the 23 years that Wichita State University at Omaha in Nebraska and Purdue University in Indiana have tracked the performance of airlines. The airline's best year was 2011. Virgin America, headquartered in Burlingame, Calif., did the best job on baggage handling and had the second-lowest rate of passengers denied seats due to overbookings. United Airlines (UAL), whose consumer complaint rate nearly doubled last year, had the worst performance. United has merged with Continental Airlines, but has had rough spots in integrating the operations of the two carriers. The number of complaints consumers filed with the Department of Transportation overall surged by one-fifth last year to 11,445 complaints, up from 9,414 in 2011. "Over the 20 some year history we've looked at it, this is still the best time of airline performance we've ever seen," said Dean Headley, a business professor at Wichita State University in Kansas, who has co-written the annual report. The best year was 2011, which was only slightly better than last year, he said. Despite those improvements, it isn't surprising that passengers are getting grumpier, Headley said. Carriers keep shrinking the size of seats in order to stuff more people into planes. Empty middle seats that might provide a little more room have vanished. And more people who have bought tickets are being turned away because flights are overbooked. "The way airlines have taken 130-seat airplanes and expanded them to 150 seats to sque

Significant labor costs and unpredictable jet fuel prices wreak havoc on variable costs. Yet some airlines generate solid returns quarter after quarter. Alaska Air Group (NYSE: ALK  ) , Ryanair (NASDAQ: RYAAY  ) , Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV  ) , and Copa Holdings (NYSE: CPA  ) each manage to be consistently profitable. Let's examine a few themes they share in common, and zero in on their individual strategic ideas.

I don know what going to happen in six months, let alone 20 years. However, I do know that OLED plays in a very exciting space, and Discovery Capital still seems to agree. Financially, OLED stock is solid, and if things go the company’s way in the coming years, it should get big in a hurry.

I a big believer in Latin America. While it has its troubles like every other emerging market, I continue to view its growing middle class with envy. While our middle class is being hallowed out, Latin America is growing exponentially. The U.S. was never more secure economically than when its middle class was growing, so history has demonstrated what this can do for a country.
