A Walgreen Stock Checkup for May

If you own Walgreen (NYSE: WAG  )  stock, 2013 has been a great year so far. Is it time to cash in, or is Walgreen still a good investment? Let's dig into how things are looking in this month's stock checkup.

Performance
Walgreen is up nearly 35% year to date. That's an excellent return for a multi-year period, much less a five-month period. How does this performance compare with the rest of the members of the S&P 500 index?

The picture says it all. Walgreen stock has trounced the S&P so far this year. Of course, some sectors perform better than others. Let's look at how well Walgreen stacks up against some of its peers.

Walgreen easily outperformed both CVS Caremark  (NYSE: CVS  )  and Wal-Mart  (NYSE: WMT  ) . However, Rite Aid  (NYSE: RAD  )  blew all of the competitors away in terms of share performance after turning the corner on profitability in the fourth quarter of 2012.    

Valuation
Everyone loves their investments to do well, but has Walgreen stock become too pricey with the big gains of 2013? Let's look at the company's historical price-to-earnings valuation.

Walgreen's trailing P/E is still quite a bit lower than the levels from a few years ago. However, the P/E is the highest it's been since 2007. This historical comparison, though, doesn't tell us definitively whether Walgreen stock is undervalued or overvalued now.

It can be helpful to look at how other companies are valued. The following chart shows both trailing and forward P/E multiples for Walgreen and its primary rivals.

On a trailing P/E basis, Walgreen stock is close in valuation with Rite Aid but stands significantly higher than CVS Caremark and Wal-Mart. However, all four companies are valued roughly the same on a forward-looking basis.

Comparisons between companies can be unwieldy, though, because of differences in their business models. CVS Caremark, for example, also operates the nation's second-largest pharmacy benefits management service. Wal-Mart's operational scope goes well beyond the types of products Walgreen sells.

S&P Capital IQ estimates the fair value of Walgreen stock at around $58 per share. That reflects a 15% premium to the stock's current price. 

Growth potential
The real key to determining whether it makes sense to buy or sell a given stock lies in understanding the company's growth potential. Using history as a benchmark doesn't leave a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Walgreen grew revenue steadily through early 2012. However, a dispute with Express Scripts resulted in considerable financial pressures. Walgreen seems to be back on track now, though, with the new contract with Express Scripts signed in July.

Earnings growth is a different story. Walgreen's track record has been spotty at best. However, in the most recent quarter the company saw earnings growth of more than 10% year over year. Of course, we also must note that this improvement is compared against the period when Walgreen faced lower sales resulting from being out of the Express Scripts network.

My take is that Walgreen should see more consistent earnings growth going forward. The company appears to have learned its lesson from the Express Scripts debacle. Its recent extension of an agreement with rival CVS Caremark lends support to this premise.

Overall
Is Walgreen stock still a good pick after the great run-up so far this year? I think so. The stock seems to be reasonably valued considering its growth potential. Investors should also consider the 2.2% dividend yield. Overall, my opinion is that the outlook appears solid for Walgreen at this time, barring any major macroeconomic issues.

Wow. That didn't take long. It was only two days ago that marijuana stocks like Growlife Inc. (OTCBB:PHOT), Medical Marijuana Inc. (OTCMKTS:MJNA), Cannabis Science Inc. (OTCMKTS:CBIS), Medbox Inc. It derives the majority of its warranty revenue from Brunswick products. Its maintenance and repair services are performed by manufacturer-trained and certified service technicians. At many of the Company�� locations, it offers boat storage services, including in-water slip storage and inside and outside land storage. Maintenance, repair, and storage services accounted for 8.9% of its revenue during fiscal 2011. This includes warranty and non-warranty services.

F&I Products

At each of the Company�� retail locations, it offers the customers the ability to finance new or used boat purchases and to purchase extended service contracts and arrange insurance coverage, including boat property, credit life, and accident, disability, and casualty insurance coverage (collectively, F&I). The Company also offers third-party extended service contracts under which, for a predetermined price, it provides all designated services pursuant to the service contract guidelines during the contract term at no additional charge to the customer above a deductible. Credit life insurance policies provide for repayment of the boat financing contract if the purchaser dies while the contract is outstanding. Accident an! d disabil! ity insurance policies provide for payment of the monthly contract obligation during any period in which the buyer is disabled. Property and casualty insurance covers loss or damage to the boat.

Brokerage Services

Through employees or subcontractors that are licensed boat or yacht brokers, the Company offers boat or yacht brokerage services at most of its retail locations. It also offers for sale brokered boats or yachts, listing them on various Internet sites, advising its other retail locations, and posting them on its Website, www.MarineMax.com. Rite Aid Turns a Profit: Why I'm Not Impressed

On Thursday morning, Rite Aid (NYSE: RAD  ) posted a fourth-quarter EPS of $0.13, which beat the average analyst estimate for a slight loss. This quarterly profit -- the second in a row for Rite Aid -- allowed the company to post its first full year of profitability since 2007. This surprisingly strong performance caused Rite Aid shares to soar nearly 30% over the course of Thursday and Friday, to highs not seen for almost five years.

Nevertheless, Rite Aid's relatively strong fiscal year 2013 results were driven by a number of one-time or short-term benefits. These items helped mask the company's fundamental competitive disadvantages vis-a-vis larger rivals Walgreen (NYSE: WAG  ) and CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS  ) . While Rite Aid could generate impressive stock returns in a best-case scenario, the company's poor competitive positioning creates substantial long-term risk for shareholders. Therefore, I still think investors would be wise to avoid the stock.

Strong results, modest outlook
Rite Aid's profit was driven by three major one-time or short-term impacts. First, the company gained a number of new customers from Walgreen's dispute with pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts (NASDAQ: ESRX  ) . Walgreen's stores rejoined the Express Scripts network as of Sept. 15, and customers are beginning to trickle back, but Rite Aid still saw a significant benefit from the dispute in fiscal year 2013. On Rite Aid's Thursday morning conference call, executives estimated the full-year benefit at $70 million -- more than half of the company's fiscal year 2013 profit.

Second, Rite Aid -- as well as other pharmacy chains -- gained additional sales this quarter from a particularly bad flu season. For example, in January, Rite Aid reported a 5% increase in prescription count, with more than two-thirds of the increase attributable to flu shots and flu-related prescriptions. Last, pharmacy chains achieved higher profit margins this year due to the introduction of a number of new generic drugs, which are more profitable than brand-name drugs.  Over time, reductions in insurance reimbursement rates will negate this margin increase.

Looking forward, Rite Aid expects same-store sales, adjusted EBITDA, and net income to all be roughly flat next year. Management called attention to the loss of some Express Scripts customers who will return to Walgreen's, fewer generic introductions, and reductions in reimbursement rates as major headwinds for fiscal year 2014. If Rite Aid executives are being overly conservative with their guidance, then the stock could continue to rise. However, based on Rite Aid's fairly uninspiring March sales results, I think the guidance for flat sales and earnings next year is very appropriate.

Encroaching competitors
Longer-term, I think Rite Aid will have trouble remaining profitable in the face of strong competition from its two larger rivals. Rite Aid has benefited from trends such as the growth of generics and the aging of the U.S. population, which are helping the whole industry. For Rite Aid, improving industry conditions have allowed the company to reduce its leverage while remodeling a few hundred stores each year. By contrast, Walgreen and CVS have more resources at their disposal, and so strong profitability has encouraged expansion. In their most recent fiscal years, CVS added 131 stores, and Walgreen added 175 stores.

Convenience is paramount in the drugstore business, and as Walgreen and CVS add locations -- thereby moving closer to customers -- they will gain market share. Expansion will also increase economies of scale for both chains. Rite Aid does not have the capital resources to expand, and has actually been reducing its store count. In the short term, closing underperforming stores should boost Rite Aid's profitability, but in the longer term, this will increase the competitive advantages of Walgreen and CVS.

Buyer beware
Rite Aid's high leverage gives the stock substantial upside if management is able to enact a sustainable turnaround. However, I am not optimistic about Rite Aid's chances in an industry where its two main competitors are significantly larger and expanding, while Rite Aid is slowly shrinking. As Walgreen and CVS move closer to customers through store expansion, Rite Aid will struggle to maintain its market share. As a result, the company's return to profitability could prove short-lived.

    Traders should now look for long-biased trades in RIC as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $1.59 or above more near-term support levels at $1.50 to $1.44 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 101,786 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then RIC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.10 to $2.20. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give RIC a chance to tag its 200-day moving average at $2.48.

As of December 31, 2010, the Company had completed the reimaging of 308 of 1,569 restaurants. Many of the reimaging projects include the addition of McCafe locations to the restaurant. It has developed system-wide guidelines for the interior and exterior design of reimaged restaurants.

McCafe Locations and Dessert Centers

McCafe locations are stylish, separate areas within restaurants where customers can purchase a range of customizable beverages, including lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, hot and iced premium coffees and hot chocolate. As of December 31, 2010, there were 267 McCafe locations in the Territories, of which 12% were operated by franchisees. Argentina, with 71 locations, has McCafe locations, followed by Brazil, with 67 locations. In addition to McCafe locations, it has Dessert Centers. The Lynch property is located in Harlan and Letcher Counties, Kentucky. During 2011, 4.8 million tons were produced from this property. The BLC properties are located in Kentucky and Tennessee. During 2011, 1.2 million tons were produced from these properties. The Company leases these properties to a number of operators, including Appolo Fuels Inc., Bell County Coal Corporation and Kopper-Glo Fuels. Prod! uction co! mes from both underground and surface mines and is trucked to preparation plants and loading facilities operated by its lessees. Coal is transported by truck and is shipped through both CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads to utility and industrial customers. Customers include Southern Company, South Carolina Electric & Gas, and numerous medium and small industrial customers. The Oak Grove property is located in Jefferson County, Alabama. The metallurgical coal is then shipped through railroad and barge to both domestic and export customers.

Illinois Basin

The Williamson property is located in Franklin and Williamson Counties, Illinois. The property is under lease to an affiliate of the Cline Group. During 2011, 6.8 million tons were mined on the property. This production is from a longwall mine. Production is shipped primarily through CN railroad to customers, such as Duke and to various export customers. The Macoupin property is located in Macoupin County, Illinois. The property is under lease to an affiliate of the Cline Group. During 2011, 1.8 tons were shipped from the property. Production is from an underground mine and is shipped through the Norfolk Southern or Union Pacific railroads or by barge to customers, such as Western KY Energy and other midwest utilities or loaded into barges for shipment to export customers. The Sato property is located in Jackson County, Illinois. During 2011, 363,000 tons were produced from the property. The property is under lease to Knight Hawk Coal LLC, an independent coal producer. As of December 31, 2011, production was from a surface mine, and coal was shipped by truck and railroad to various midwest and southeast utilities.

Northern Powder River Basin

The Western Ener! gy proper! ty is located in Rosebud and Treasure Counties, Montana. During 2011, 2.7 million tons were produced from the Company�� property. A subsidiary of Westmoreland Coal Company has two coal leases on the property. Coal is produced by surface dragline mining, and the coal is transported by either truck or beltline to the four-unit 2,200-megawatt Colstrip generation station located at the mine mouth and by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad to Minnesota Power. A small amount of coal is transported by truck to other customers.

BRP Properties

As of December 31, 2011, BRP had acquired, in several stages, approximately 8.8 million mineral acres in 29 states from International Paper. As of December 31, 2011, BRP held 78 revenue generating leases. BRP�� assets include approximately 300,000 gross acres of oil and gas mineral rights in Louisiana, of which over 72,000 acres were under lease, as of December 31, 2011. In addition, BRP holds a gross production royalty interest on approximately 23,000 mineral acres under lease in Louisiana. The remaining oil and gas mineral acreage in Louisiana is not leased. As of December 31, 2011, BRP owned nearly 246,000 gross mineral acres of primarily lignite coal rights in the Gulf Coast region, of which approximately 5,000 acres are leased under three separate leases in Louisiana and Alabama. In addition to the coal rights, BRP held aggregate reserves, including limestone, granite, clay, and sand and gravel reserves, under lease in six states.     One health care player that insiders are active in here is Hansen Medical (HNSN), which develops, manufactures and markets new generation of medical robotics for accurate positioning, manipulation and stable control of catheters and catheter-based technologies. Insiders are buying this stock into relative weakness, since shares are off by 19.2% so far in 2013.

    Hansen Medical has a market cap of $113 million and an enterprise value of $118 million. This stock trades at a premium valuation, with a price-to-sales of 7.13. Its estimated growth rate for this year is -3%, and for next year it's pegged at 36.2%. This is not a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $21.08 million and its total debt is $29.57 million.

    A beneficial owner just bought 8.1 million shares, or about $9.96 million worth of stock, at $1.23 per share.

    From a technical perspective, HNSN is currently trending above its 50-day and just below is 200-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock recently spiked up sharply from its low of $1.14 to its recent high of $1.96 a share with big upside volume. Since that move, shares of HNSN have pulled back and started to consolidation between $1.77 and $1.60 a share. This stock is now starting to bounce higher and move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

    My first earnings short-squeeze trade idea is surplus and salvage assets auction marketplace player Liquidity Services (LQDT), which is set to release numbers on Thursday before the market open. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Liquidity Services to report revenue of $124.48 million on earnings of 45 cents per share.

    The current short interest as a percentage of the float Liquidity Services is extremely high at 34.7%. That means that out of the 25.21 million shares in the tradable float, 9.12 million shares are sold short by the bears. This is a huge short interest on a stock with a very low tradable float. Any bullish earnings news could easily spark a monster short-squeeze for shares of LQDT post-earnings.

    From a technical perspective, LQDT is currently trending below both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bearish. This stock has been uptrending a bit over the last month, with shares moving higher from its low of $24.77 to its recent high of $28.25 a share. During that move, shares of LQDT have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of LQDT within range of triggering a breakout trade post-earnings.

    If you're bullish on LQDT, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $28.25 a share, and then once it takes out both its 50-day at $29.59 and its 200-day at $31.96 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 414,200 shares. If that breakout hits, then LQDT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $36 to $38 a share.

    I would simply avoid LQDT or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout, and then drops back below some key near-term support levels at $26 to its 52-week l

    Performant earns fees for collecting delinquent student loans (about 60% of the business) and providing recovery services for improper Medicare payments (close to 30%). The recent sell-off in the stock seems due to comments from Sallie Mae regarding lower rehabilitation fees paid to Guarantee Agencies, which investors expect to "trickle down" to service providers like PFMT. The stock has been sold off dramatically on these assumptions. We should know more when the company reports earnings in the coming weeks, but this is one worth looking at more closely - the firm has been growing revenue at 30%+ rates. WORTHY OF CONSIDERATION.
