Only a ‘black swan’ will bring back stock volatility

Quick stock pullbacks have limited volatility to 'spikes'

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Investors are becoming more accustomed to holding firm during market drops, making it more likely that it will take a true "black swan" event to usher in a return to stock volatility.

After a near 30% run-up in the S&P 500 Index (SPX)  in 2013, many strategists were calling for a return to volatility in 2014. Instead, the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) has generally held to low levels, with the occasional spike past 20, just like in 2013.

As volatility has dropped, stocks have moved sideways: The S&P 500 is up 1.6% for the year and the VIX is down 9.3% for the year.

Russell Rhoads, senior instructor at the Options Institute at CBOE, said investors are expressing a "justified complacency" given that recent jumps in the VIX don't remain at those levels for too long. One-off events, like Ukraine, command investor attention for a while and then fall off the radar, enough to cause the VIX to spike but not enough to sustain the level.

A black swan event in the economy and markets would have a more far-reaching, deeper impact. Author and trader Nassim Taleb used the term to describe rare, hard-to-predict, and high-impact events like the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Bill Gross explains Treasury rally • Clock is ticking for bond-fund investors • Why a dollar rally is so stubbornly elusive

/conga/story/2014/05/gross_exclusive.html 307677

For sustained volatility to return to stocks, we'd have to have two crises hit right around the same time, something like a really unpopular Federal Open Market Committee meeting and a fresh Ukraine-like threat to geopolitical stability, without an apparent resolution, Rhoads said.

"We just haven't had that double whammy," said Rhoads. "The smart guys aren't necessarily panicking at small selloffs, and since 2013 they've been right."

Over the past 12 months, the 200-day moving average for the VIX has been essentially flat, currently at 14.38, compared with 14.90 a year ago.

One common misconception is mistaking choppy markets with volatile ones. While markets have been choppy lately, don't expect that to show up in the VIX, Rhoads noted. When trading is directionless, or choppy, it's actually not volatile as measured by the VIX, he said.

Last week, the Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP) rose 0.5%. It's moved between weekly gains and losses for six straight weeks.

Large-cap indexes are making similar zig-zag moves. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA)  declined by 0.6%, reversing from gains the prior week. The S&P 500 ended the week down less than 0.1%, while the VIX declined 3.7% on the week.

What this means for investors is that holding onto those winning broad-market positions from last year has worked —so far. But folks who have tried to hedge with VIX-linked investments aren't smiling. Barclays Bank PLC iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (VXX)  is down 14% this year and 50% over the last 12 months. Low volatility also isn't great for very active traders, who have a harder time finding good opportunities in a dull market.

Bear market grumblings

Debate is still lively whether a bear market is lurking around the corner . Some argue that the meandering market is the grumbling of a bear market that will start with a whimper. Then, there's also a historical precedence for weak markets before the midterm elections during a presidential cycle . And over the past few weeks, there's a been a spike in worry that the selloff in small-cap stocks, reflected in the 10% pullback in the Russell 2000 (RUT)  , was the harbinger of a broader retreat.

Read: Stocks are telling you a bear market is coming.

But many have a hard time figuring out what will spark a sustained selloff.

"There's very little evidence that people are positioning for a bear market," said Randy Frederick, managing director of trading and derivatives at Charles Schwab.

Movado Stock Keeps on Ticking for MOV Investors

Why all the worries about the retailers?

Movado Group (MOV) recently blew by the Zacks Consensus Estimate for the fiscal fourth quarter by 53.3% as sales rose 13.3% for the year. This Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) is expected to post double digit sales growth again in fiscal 2015.

Movado Group makes watches in its Switzerland manufacturing facilities under the brands Movado, Ebel, Concord, ESQ Movado, Coach, Tommy Hilfiger, Hugo Boss, Juicy Couture, Lacoste and Scuderia Ferrari. It also operates Movado company stores in the United States.

Second Beat in a Row in Fiscal Q4

On Mar 26, Movado reported its fiscal fourth quarter and full year 2014 results. It easily beat the Zacks Consensus by 16 cents. Earnings were $46 cents per share compared to the consensus of 30 cents per share.

Sales were up 9% in the quarter to $132.3 million from $123.6 million a year ago led by growth in the licensed brand category.

Gross profit margin got a nice bump to 52.4% of sales compared with 50.7% of sales in the year ago quarter.

The company also took a $8.3 million pre-tax charge for its decision to reduce its ESQ Movado business, which is one of its watch brands at the lower price point, to focus on Movado brand watches. These are a higher price point and also have higher gross margins. It will still sell ESQ with its retail partners and at Movado.com but it will free up shelf space for its higher priced branded product.

Double Digit Earnings Growth Expected in Fiscal 2015

The company gave fiscal 2015 earnings per share guidance of $2.44, which is 18% earnings growth from fiscal 2014. The analysts are on board, with the Zacks Consensus Estimate coming in a penny above that at $2.45.

However, the possible introduction of a smartwatch later this year is an unknown. Will buyers of a smartwatch forgo buying a traditional one? No one knows.

Shares Pulled Back

Shares had a big rally in the second half of 2013 but as retail jitters picked up around the holidays, the shares weakened.

1397074627 scaled 425 Movado Stock Keeps on Ticking for MOV Investors

All this uncertainty means Movado trades with an attractive valuation. It has a forward P/E of 17 and a price-to-book ratio of 2.3. A P/B ratio under 3.0 usually means a company is undervalued. As an added bonus, the company also just raised its quarterly dividend by 25%. It now yields 0.9%.

Movado is also in an industry which is at the top 1% of the Zacks Industry Rank. The retail-jewelers rank 3 out of 265 industries.

If you’re looking for a retailer with double digit earnings growth, and one which is NOT blaming the weather, you might want to keep Movado on your short list.

3 Big Stocks Getting Big Attention

BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) -- Today, we're leveraging the power of the crowd to take a look at five of the most active stocks on the market today.

Often, uber-active names have some sort of a technical or fundamental catalyst driving investors' attention on shares. That's especially true now that earnings season is officially underway. And when there's a big catalyst, there's often a trading opportunity.

Without further ado, here's a look at today's stocks.

BlackBerry

Nearest Resistance: $10

Nearest Support: $9

Catalyst: Third Point Position

BlackBerry (BBRY) is suffering a high-volume hangover this afternoon, correcting from the rally shares got earlier this week that Daniel Loeb's Third Point hedge fund had acquired a 2% stake in the cellphone maker. Today's price action is a good indication that you don't want to own this stock, no matter the high-profile shareholders who own it beside you.

That's because BBRY is currently forming a descending triangle pattern, a bearish setup that's formed by a downtrending resistance level to the upside and horizontal support below shares at $9. A move though $9 is the sell signal. Momentum broke in BBRY back in January. If buyers can't make a stand by holding shares above $9, the next-closest support level is $5.50.

Coca-Cola

Nearest Resistance: $39

Nearest Support: $36.50

Catalyst: Earnings

Blue-chip stocks aren't immune from the selling this afternoon. Beverage giant Coca-Cola (KO) is down on big volume for the second day after it reported its fourth quarter earnings on Tuesday. Coke earned 38 cents per share, a number that fell in-line with analyst expectations, but the recent trend in this stock has been down, and shareholders weren't impressed with the perfunctory result.

Coke is testing support at $37.25 today, a price level that springboarded KO's price higher back at the start of the month. If Coca-Cola doesn't catch a bid there, stronger support at $36.50 looks like a buying opportunity.

Nabors Industries

Nearest Resistance: N/A

Nearest Support: $18

Catalyst: Earnings Beat

Oil and gas driller Nabors Industries (NBR) is up almost 12% this afternoon, following a solid earnings call for the fourth quarter. Earnings came in at 26 cents per share for the quarter and 87 cents for the full year, both numbers coming in above the Wall Street consensus estimate. With shares at new highs in today's session, NBR's big-momentum move looks buyable today.

While NBR's price action today looks impressive, it was the lower-volume breakout above $18 last week that cleared the way for today's huge move. Now, even though NBR is well above support at $18, more upside looks likely. If you decide to be a buyer here, keep a tight stop in place.

Top Oil Stocks To Invest In 2015

Shutterstock A million dollars isn't what it used to be, but it's still a lot of money. It's enough to be a life-changing amount of cash, even if it winds up not being enough to completely fund your retirement on its own. On its own, using the 4 percent withdrawal rule as a guide, that cool million should provide you around $40,000 per year in inflation-adjusted income. Still, for typical American retirees, personal savings is just a start: Social Security adds supplemental income -- around $15,600 a year for a typical retiree. Medicare covers a substantial portion of health insurance costs for Americans age 65 or older. Typical retirees pay neither Social Security nor Medicare taxes on their non-wage incomes. If you've paid off your mortgage by the time you retire, your housing costs are a mere fraction of what they normally would be. If your kids are grown and independent, the costs of raising them can vanish. With that total picture in mind, even today, a $1 million nest egg still should provide a great foundation for a comfortable retirement in most of the country. There's More to Retirement Of course, you may want more out of your retirement than what that type of nest egg can provide you. Things like international travel, spoiling the grandkids and/or a summer home up north and a winter home in the Sun Belt can easily chew through the kind of income that size nest egg can provide. In addition, as you get deeper into retirement, you may start needing help managing your home and daily activities, which could add substantially to your costs.

The fleet includes double-hulled vessels and single-hulled vessels, which operate in South America and Africa only.

Distribution

The distribution segment sells oil products, which are produced by the supply operations. At December 31, 2009, the BR network included 7,221 service stations, or 19.2% of the stations in Brazil. The Company supplies and operates Petrobras Distribuidora S.A., which accounts for 38% of the total Brazilian distribution market. At December 31, 2009, the total assets of the International Segment represented 7.4% of the Company total assets.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rudy Martin]

In addition, we recommend buying shares in Brazilian energy giant Petroleo Brasileiro Petrobras S.A. (PBR.A).

Despite a gradual rise in crude oil prices, problems with Brazil's economy, compounded by obstacles in Petrobras's scramble to finance significant on-shore and off-shore hydrocarbon discoveries, have ganged up to erode PBR.A's stock price this year.

Top Oil Stocks To Invest In 2015: MGM Resorts International(MGM)

MGM Resorts International, through its subsidiaries, primarily owns and operates casino resorts in the United States. The company?s resorts offer gaming, hotel, dining, entertainment, retail, and other resort amenities. It also owns and operates golf courses and a golf club. As of December 31, 2010, the company owned and operated 15 properties located in Nevada, Mississippi, and Michigan; and has 50% investments in 4 other casino resorts in Nevada, Illinois, and Macau. In addition, MGM Resorts International has an agreement with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, which owns and operates a casino resort in Connecticut, to carry the ?MGM Grand? brand name. The company was formerly known as MGM MIRAGE and changed its name to MGM Resorts International in June 2010. MGM Resorts International was founded in 1986 and is based in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

The other knock against the sector is merely that it's cyclical and prone to downswings especially for the casino operators relying heavily on the currently stagnant U.S. market. MGM Grand (NYSE: MGM  ) is an example of a casino operator that's expanded into Macau but still derives the majority of its business from the United States. Unsurprisingly, it hasn't turned an annual profit since 2007 and isn't expected to until at least 2015.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

What we can take from this is that, most likely, Las Vegas Sands and Melco Crown (NASDAQ: MPEL  ) will see a large increase in revenue when they report earnings. We can also assume that MGM Resorts (NYSE: MGM  ) will show similar trends in Macau because its location is next to Wynn's. There's far more growth to be had than what Wynn is showing and Las Vegas Sands and Melco Crown likely took significant share during the first quarter.

    Monday
The market kicks off a new trading week with Northern Tier Energy (NYSE: NTI  ) stepping up to report its third quarterly report since going public last year. The limited partnership has been attracting investors as a result of its chunky yield. If it can maintain its most recent quarterly dividend rate of $1.27 per unit, we would be seeing a yield of 20%.

Resource players like SandRidge and Oasis aren't the only energy companies aggressively spending to grow. E&P MLP's like BreitBurn Energy Partners (NASDAQ: BBEP  ) and LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) are also getting into the capital spending act. As you could see in the earlier chart, LINN spends the greatest portion of its cash flow to grow its production. Not only that but LINN is in the process of closing its deal for Berry Petroleum which is a resource player that has been spending heavily to grow production. One of the reasons LINN, as well as BreitBurn, has been investing heavily is to grow oil production in order to offset the effect of lower natural gas prices on margins.

Oil and gas income producer, LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) , along with its affiliate LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) , will report first-quarter earnings on April 25 before markets open. It's an important report for LINN which has been under the spotlight of short sellers that have questioned the company's true value proposition to investors. While the company has done a good jobs to alleviate investor concerns, the upcoming report needs to put them completely at ease. With that as context, here are three things I'll be watching for in the report.

Hot Media Companies To Own For 2015

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- In another bruise to its balance sheet, JPMorgan Chase (JPM) has reportedly agreed to a tentative $4 billion settlement with the U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), according to The Wall Street Journal. The deal would settle allegations the big bank misled Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, government-sponsored entities, on mortgages it sold them.

The final amount to be determined will be bundled with settlements already reached in claims against the bank from the Department of Justice. The figure could reach as high as $11 billion, according to media estimates.

A JPMorgan spokesman declined to comment.

Earlier in the month, JPMorgan reported an unexpected third-quarter loss of $380 million or 17 cents a share, mainly due to $7.2 billion in legal expenses accrued during the period. Shares closed slightly higher, gaining 0.17% in Friday trading to close at $54.30. TheStreet Ratings team rates JPMORGAN CHASE & CO as a Buy with a ratings score of B+. TheStreet Ratings Team has this to say about their recommendation: "We rate JPMORGAN CHASE & CO (JPM) a BUY. This is driven by several positive factors, which we believe should have a greater impact than any weaknesses, and should give investors a better performance opportunity than most stocks we cover. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its revenue growth, good cash flow from operations, compelling growth in net income, solid stock price performance and notable return on equity. We feel these strengths outweigh the fact that the company has had generally high debt management risk by most measures that we evaluated." A few of the basic lessons we can learn from the WWE Network, which went live on Feb. 24, 2014, include:

Streaming video can increase a company revenue. On March 30, 2014, right after WWE Network appeared, World Wrestling Entertainment reported a TTM revenue figure of $509.54 million for the first quarter of 2014. On June 30, 2014, WWE reported a TTM revenue figure of $513.57 million. The company revenues grew by $4.3 million. Building a stable audience for streaming video is tough. The WWE managed to sign up 700,000 paying subscribers by June 30, 2014. Yet Variety.com reported that it had lost 128,000 subscribers between April 6 and June 30. Convincing consumers, even diehard wrestling fans, to spend money on streaming video subscriptions is hard. WWE found its fans balked at paying $9.99 a month (around the cost of a Chipotle dinner) for a six-month subscription. World Wrestling is now trying to lure fans with a no-commitment monthly subscription of $12.99 that is supposed to rise to $19.99 at some point in the future. Broadcast, satellite, and cable TV are not dead yet, and they will fight back against streaming video. Satellite TV companies Dish Network (DISH) and DirecTV Group (DTV) refused to carry WWE pay per view events unless it killed WWE Network. The satellite companies did this because wrestling is still one of the highest rated programs on basic cable and satellite. Supplying cheap programming through streaming video can hurt your core business. Historically, some of WWE biggest revenue generators have been pay per view eventsajor wrestling shows featuring big matches between top stars that cable and satellite viewers pay extra to watch. Since WWE Network started streaming pay per views live for just $9.99, pay per view revenues and ratings have collapsed. The June 2013 Payback pay per view attracted 186,000 buyers; only 67,000 pay per view fans tuned into the June 2014 Payback event. Overall, WWE pay per view revenues hav

Finally, satellite TV provider DIRECTV (NASDAQ: DTV  ) tacked on 6.9% after its first-quarter results also easily topped estimates. Thanks to $1.38 billion in share repurchases as well as the addition of 604,000 net subscribers, DIRECTV reported a nearly 8% increase in revenue to $7.58 billion as EPS increased to $1.43. Analysts, on the other hand, had expected $7.53 billion in revenue but just $1.10 in EPS. The key for DIRECTV is in the differentiation from DISH Networks, which is allowing consumers more choices and helping to increase average revenue per user in a very challenging economic environment. Still priced very reasonably, DIRECTV's run higher may not be over.

CBS Corporation was founded in 1986 and is headquartered in New York, New York.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Paul Ausick]

And it not just lost subscriber revenue, but lost leverage over content providers. Time Warner blamed its disputes with CBS Corp. (NYSE: CBS) and Journal Communications over retransmission fees for its subscriber losses in the third quarter. Content producers like CBS are demanding higher retransmission payments from cable and satellite providers and dwindling subscriber numbers knock a sizeable chunk off providerstake.

  • [By Harold L. Vogel]

And then there's the thorny retransmission-consent issue that delights broadcast networks and their local affiliates. As the recent nasty spat between CBS (CBS) and Time Warner Cable has illustrated, MSOs - being more immediately and intimately linked by billing and marketing to viewers than are broadcasters - must either pay up or bear most of the wrath of consumers. Fifty cents to a dollar a month per sub to retransmit a broadcast network's signal is nowadays not that unusual and provides the old stodgy broadcasters with an important second revenue source in addition to advertising. (Unofficial estimates have it that within five years, CBS will be receiving $2 per month per sub from Time Warner and others.)

  • [By WALLSTCHEATSHEET]

CBS is one of the largest nationwide providers of entertainment and mass media services. The company’s dispute with Time Warner Cable is now being mediated by the FCC because the companies have not been able to reach an agreement. The stock has been soaring and is now consolidating slightly below all-time high prices. Over the past four quarters, earnings and revenues have been rising, which has left investors excited about the company. Relative to its peers and sector, CBS has been a year-to-date performance leader. Look for CBS to OUTPERFORM.

Dear Fellow Shareholder: The U.S. economy continues to gradually expand, building on the 5+ year recovery from the Great Recession. Employment levels are improving, though progress has been slower than expected. Inflation, for now, remains subdued. As signaled and on cue, the Fed has been weaning the economy (and investors) off of the extraordinary uantitative easingstimulus. Investors have generally shrugged off world events that might otherwise cause high anxiety (ISIS and the Middle East, Russia and Ukraine, etc.). As attention now turns to when the Fed will raise short-term interest rates, it seems plausible that volatility may intensify as the stimulus security blanket is removed. In the meantime, companies are taking advantage of the artificially low interest rate environment and sanguine investor sentiment. Merger activity remains robust, fueled by cheap and readily available credit. The IPO market has been very active, headlined by the successful Alibaba offering in September. Corporate treasurers continue to issue loads of debt on attractive terms, locking in generationally low interest rates for long terms. While these conditions will not last forever, they have helped opportunistic managers accelerate equity value growth at many companies.Investment Commentary and Outlook After three years of seemingly non-stop gains, the stock market took a pause in the third quarter. While most large cap indices eked out modest positive returns, the broader investing waters were far less placid. Small cap stocks sold off as the Russell 2000 declined more than 7% during the quarter. Energy stocks, both large and small, fell materially as investors worried about too much oil and gas supply coming online in North America (what a difference a decade makes). High yield bonds wobbled briefly in July, then again in September. Increasingly, investors are not treating all securities the same, and as stock pickers we welcome this development. If the market's had a great year in 2013, Discovery Communications (DISCA) has managed to do one better. Shares of the $30 billion TV broadcaster have rallied almost 32% year-to-date, stomping the performance of the S&P 500 by a wide margin.

Still, investors hate this stock right now. With a short interest ratio of 10.7, it would take short sellers more than two weeks of buying at current volume levels to cover their positions.

Discovery owns a handful of international cable TV channels, including the namesake Discovery Channel, TLC, Science Channel and Animal Planet, and positions in properties such as Oprah Winfrey's OWN Network, launched in 2011. Discovery's niche positioning gives it some big benefits -- the firm's channels focus on topics such as science, technology and history, and they're able to sell more targeted advertising as a result. That's helped push the firm's net margins far above those of more conventional network broadcasters.

Discovery's channels are only part of the story. Content is king in the broadcast business, and so Discovery's 100,000 hour video library provides the firm with an extremely valuable asset -- especially now that streaming video firms such as Amazon.com (AMZN) and Netflix (NFLX) are falling all over themselves to license content.

DISCA has some tailwinds at its back right now, and its hefty short interest gives it the potential to pop this summer.

Hot Media Companies To Own For 2015: DISH Network Corporation(DISH)

DISH Network Corporation, through its subsidiaries, provides direct broadcast satellite (DBS) subscription television services in the United States. It offers programming that includes approximately 280 basic video channels, 60 Sirius satellite radio music channels, 30 premium movie channels, 35 regional and specialty sports channels, 2,800 local channels, 250 Latino and international channels, and 55 channels of pay-per-view content. The company also offers local HD channels in approximately 160 markets and 215 national HD channels; and receiver systems, including a small satellite dish, digital set-top receivers, and remote controls. In addition, it provides DISHOnline.com, which enables DISH Network subscribers to watch 150,000 movies, television shows, clips, and trailers; DISH Remote Access that enables subscribers to remotely manage their DVRs using compatible mobile devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops through their broadband-connected receiver; and Go ogle TV that enables DISH Network subscribers to search the Internet, check email, interact with social media, and find additional online programming content while simultaneously watching television. As of March 31, 2011, the company had approximately 14.191 million customers. DISH Network provides receiver systems and programming through direct sales channels; and independent third parties, such as small satellite retailers, direct marketing groups, local and regional consumer electronics stores, nationwide retailers, and telecommunications companies. The company was founded in 1980 and is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado.

DISH Network Corp (NSDQ: DISH) is also said to be hungry for a fight over T-Mobile.

A Sprint-T-Mobile tie-up could be a game-changer, as it would reduce to three the number of nationwide cellular service operators. The Federal Communications Commission has already rejected an AT&T Inc (NYSE: T) move for T-Mobile that would have accomplished the same winnowing of the field.

Interest Rates and the Fed’s Taper

With the long-awaited "tapering" of the Federal Reserve's bond-buying here, the question is, what does it mean for long-term interest rates? How much and how fast they rise depends on whether investors take up the slack. If other bond buyers step up to the plate in January, then rate increases will be small over the course of the next year. If not, investor anxiety will push up rates faster. Short-term rates will not be affected until late in 2015, when the economy is likely to be strong enough and unemployment, low enough for the Fed to hike the federal funds rate.

See Also: Interest Rates and the Real Unemployment Rate

Outgoing Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke made it official that the central bank will start trimming its bond purchases in January. Though he announced only a first $10-billion reduction in the Fed's $85 billion-a-month purchases of long-term securities, he implied that further cuts would be forthcoming at regular intervals if all goes according to plan. He also, of course, reserved the right to delay cuts if it doesn't.

The impact on interest rates is likely to be a gradual rise in long-term rates, pushing them to somewhere between 3.3% and 3.6% at the end of 2014. Here's why:

The timing of the wind-down is ruled to a significant degree by when the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee meets, because its members vote on whether to cut purchases and by how much. At any time, the FOMC could elect to accelerate, decelerate or even suspend the planned reductions in bond purchases, depending on how the economy -- in particular, inflation and unemployment -- are developing.

There are eight scheduled meetings in 2014. If the committee decides at each meeting to systematically cut its buying by $10 billion monthly, with a final $5 billion purchase, it would wrap up quantitative easing by the end of 2014. Between now and then, the Fed would still buy $460 billion or more of long-term securities, pushing its balance sheet of securities, loans and other assets to $4.5 trillion by the time the program ends.

If interest rates rise by about 0.1 percentage point every time the Fed cuts, the 10-year Treasury bond will end 2014 at just above 3.6%. That's how much rates rose in the 24 hours immediately following the Fed's announcement that it would start tapering. It's reasonable to assume that rates could continue to climb that much with each reduction in the amount of monthly quantitative easing, if investors in Treasuries remain nervous that demand for long-term securities will fall as the Fed exits.

January could set the tone for interest rates for the rest of the year. If, however, investors see other bond buyers step up to the plate in January and each time thereafter, replacing Fed purchases to hold demand steady, nervousness will be muted. Long-term rates would likely climb by only about half that amount with each Fed meeting, and they'd wind up at about 3.3% at the end of 2014.

Interest rates and the Fed taper graphic

Fed policymakers could speed up the process, of course, cutting by increments greater than $10 billion each month. One reason for doing so is the ballooning size of the Fed's portfolio. It makes markets uneasy to see the Fed holding such an enormous quantity of long-term securities, and some Fed officials fear that the size of the portfolio creates another policy dilemma: how the Fed can divest itself without roiling markets. Reducing quantitative easing faster also appeals to those who favor injecting less stimulus into the economy and allowing it to stand on its own feet sooner. Ditto, those who worry the Fed's huge purchases potentially contain seeds of a longer-term problem with inflation.

Conversely, the Fed could temporarily suspend or skip an opportunity at one or more FOMC meetings to trim bond buying if recovery falters or interest rates rise too quickly. But a pace of about a $10-billion reduction for each FOMC meeting is the most likely.

Note that the financial markets reacted in diverse ways to the Fed's announcement. The stock market rallied, heartened that the Fed judged the economy to be making progress, while, predictably, long-term bond prices fell and rates rose. Short-term rates, however, were virtually unchanged and will likely remain so for some time. Bernanke's reaffirmation of the Fed's patience plus the publicly announced views of FOMC members both point to a date in late 2015 as the most likely time for the Fed to hike the federal funds rate. It'll take until then for the jobless rate to fall well below 6.5%, the Fed's previously announced threshold for possible action.

Five years ago, a raging financial crisis was pulling well-known Wall Street firms into the ashes and devastating lives on Main Street as jobs disappeared and homes were foreclosed. The start of the Fed's tapering can be seen as a historic step away from an extraordinary period of monetary stimulus.

4 Better Bets Than the Twitter IPO

Here's our advice for Twitter's initial public offering, summed up in less than 140 characters: Don't invest in the Twitter IPO. It's not that Twitter's stock won't turn out to be a good investment. Maybe it will. Or maybe it won't. Time will tell. But our advice for any IPO is to wait at least 90 days before buying in. That allows enough time for the hype to die down and rational analysis of a company's business prospects to take over.

See Also: The 7 Deadly Sins of Investing

This approach paid off handsomely with the Facebook (FB) IPO. The stock debuted on May 18, 2012, at $38. By session's end its price had gained just 23 cents, defying widespread predictions of a massive first-day pop. Three months after the IPO, Facebook was down to $20. Opportunistic investors who bought at that point have since enjoyed a 160% return (all prices as of October 17).

IPO expert Josef Schuster says the risk for individual investors is getting caught up in the buzz about hot IPOs that later crash while overlooking less attractive "cold deals."

"Our great performers are the boring IPOs that the individual investor may have neglected --, like HCA Holdings (HCA), which didn't do anything for a long time and is now trading at all-time highs," says Schuster, who runs a Chicago-based IPO research firm, IPOX Schuster LLC. "Dollar General (DG) — it wasn't a 'hot IPO.' It didn't do anything on the first day. But it went up over the long run."

Schuster created an index of stocks that come onto the market as IPOs or corporate spinoffs. The index is the basis for an exchange-traded fund, First Trust US IPO Index (FPX). Schuster's rules for his index specify that an IPO will be added no sooner than six trading days after it debuts to avoid the volatility of the first few sessions.

Consider investing in the ETF for broad exposure to the IPO market. The fund is up 38% year to date — better than the 24% return of Standard & Poor's 500-stock index.

Looking for individual stocks? A number of IPOs that have turned cold since their debuts within the past couple of years may intrigue investors with an appetite for out-of-favor shares. Here are four worth considering:

SeaWorld Entertainment (SEAS) went public in April with a first-day splash befitting Shamu's owner. Ahead of the IPO it posted 2012 sales growth of more than 7%, better than Cedar Fair (FUN) and Six Flags Entertainment (SIX). In its first report as a public company, however, SeaWorld's earnings came in below analysts' forecasts. Investors were spooked at the news of a 9.5% decline in attendance in the second quarter of 2013. The shares, at $29.57 now trade below their first-day close and are priced at 22 times estimated 2014 earnings. SeaWorld's stock yields 2.7%.

Poor weather in the second quarter hurt attendance at nearly all SeaWorld parks. But the visitors who did attend spent more to get in, says Barclays Capital analyst Felicia Hendrix, and spent more on concessions once they were inside, boosting revenue per attendee by 6.7%. Hendrix says the company's second-half performance will influence the share price in the short term. In the long run the company's strong brands, including Busch Gardens and the namesake SeaWorld parks, will keep its coffers brimming.

TRI Pointe Homes (TPH) and Ply Gem Holdings (PGEM) went public earlier this year as the U.S. housing market showed signs of life post-recession. Each stock gained more than 10% on the first day of trading. More recently, though, they've both been caught up in fears that rising mortgage rates will stop the housing rebound in its tracks.

TRI Pointe is a homebuilder operating exclusively in Colorado and its home state of California. Analyst Steve Stelmach, of FBR Capital Markets, who has a "buy" rating on the stock, says the company has a strong portfolio of land and is generating orders at a better-than-expected pace. At $13.92, shares are well below Stelmach's $24 price target.

Top 10 Communications Equipment Stocks To Watch Right Now

Ply Gem sells construction products to builders, including siding, windows and doors. Expectations of a slowing recovery in homebuilding recently prompted analyst Daniel Oppenheim, of Credit Suisse, to lower the target price that accompanies his "buy" rating to $21 — 43% above today's levels of $14.68.

Millennial Media (MM) was a hot IPO, jumping 92% on its first day of trading in March 2012. But investors soured quickly as the provider of mobile advertising fell short of some analysts' financial forecasts in its first report as a public company. Today, at $6.88, it trades at one-fourth its all-time high.

Millennial Media has big competition — Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG) — but it claims to be the largest company that isn't affiliated with a single operating system or set of mobile devices. It's bulking up, buying privately held competitor Jumptap in a stock-and-cash deal initially valued at about $200 million.

The risk of the large acquisition, coupled with recent financial results that missed management's forecast, has led a number of analysts to assign "hold" ratings. But analysts also say there's plenty of potential in a company that reported a 45% gain in sales in the second quarter. "The stock's current valuation likely does not give enough credit for expected growth," says Michael Graham, of Canaccord Genuity, whose 12-month target price of $10 represents a gain of 45% from today's levels.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that shareholder discontent forced T-Mobile's parent company to sweeten its MetroPCS (NYSE: TMUS  ) buyout offer. Two hedge funds, Paulson & Co. and P. Schoenfeld Asset Management, so badgered MetroPC with SEC filings opposing the merger that Deutsche Telekom finally came up with terms that quelled the misgivings of those influential investors.

  • [By Anders Bylund]

The telecoms are suffering because a smaller competitor made itself look good last night. T-Mobile (NYSE: TMUS  ) CEO John Legere took the stage at the prestigious Consumer Electronics Show to preview subscriber counts for the fourth quarter, and to unveil another round of T-Mobile's "Uncarrier" strategies.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

2013 is panning out to be a great year for shares of T-Mobile US (TMUS) -- since the $21 billion cellular carrier officially went public earlier this year, its share price has climbed more than 57%. Even though T-Mobile is only the number-four carrier here in the U.S., its comparatively small business gives it the ability to grow at a breakneck pace. And with more than 1.1 million new customers added to the carrier in 2013, TMUS is living up to the hype.

T-Mobile US is the result of a combination of legacy T-Mobile and discount carrier MetroPCS. T-Mobile got a spectacular deal on MetroPCS' customer list – the micro-carrier traded for a tenth of the premium per user on the big names like AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ). By joining forces, T-Mobile now serves 43 million customers across the two brands; as the firm unifies its business under the T-Mobile banner, shareholders should see some big efficiency improvements.

TMUS has been working hard to incent customers to come over. It's done that by investing heavily in widening its LTE footprint, and by making it easier to bring devices over to its network. The decision to offer tablet users a free 200MB per month data plan is likely to draw plenty of new devices to TMUS at a very low customer acquisition cost.

If T-Mobile can build a reputation as the value carrier in a commoditized space, expect the growth pace to continue.
