Believe what you will about the long-term effect of the Fed's actions, but today, you can see from the Dow's strongest performers how well the market is taking the news. Economically sensitive Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) and Alcoa (NYSE: AA  ) are both up sharply today as investors weigh the impact of further stimulus on the U.S. economy -- and it seems they've decided that faster U.S. growth should lead to further global activity as well. Yet that's far from a foregone conclusion. For Caterpillar, the recent recovery in gold and silver prices could spark renewed interest from mining companies for heavy equipment, but price levels remain far below where they were earlier this year. Alcoa, meanwhile, needs greater evidence not only of renewed construction activity but also of constraints on aluminum supply from its competitors, especially in China. A boost in activity could actually spur Chinese aluminum-producers to make more of the lightweight metal, extending glut conditions and hurting Alcoa's long-term profit outlook.

Oil-field services company, Schlumberger's (NYSE: SLB  ) large size and global presence means that it really has a read on the pulse of the global energy industry. When Schlumberger executives speak, it's a good idea for investors to listen closely because the company can provide important industry insights. With that in mind, I'd like to point your attention to a couple of important quotes from the company's first-quarter conference call.

For instance, though oilfield services firms Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) and Halliburton (NYSE: HAL  ) have shown a keen interest in developing China's shale resources, the absence of clearly defined and enforceable patent and property protection laws has given them reason to pause.

Schlumberger (SLB) was a top performer during the quarter, continuing its strong performance since the summer of 2012. Furthermore, in just the last three years, the upstream E&P industry has spent on average $600 billion per year yielding only a net increase in global oil production coming from the shale deposits in North American. If you're anything like me, two things went through your head when you saw this. First, you regret that you missed out on the investment opportunity. Since the end of 2009, shares in all three of these companies, led by Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR  ) , have simply trounced the broader market. Even the worst performer of the bunch, Family Dollar (NYSE: FDO  ) , beat it by nearly a factor of two.
