The price of oil rose above $88 a barrel on Friday as traders cautiously returned to commodity markets following sharp sell-offs this week.
At midday, benchmark crude for May delivery was up 30 cents to $88.30 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Thursday the Nymex contract for West Texas Intermediate rose $1.05 a barrel.
Crude has lost about $9 a barrel since the beginning of the month, as various reports highlighted slower growth in China and still-sluggish growth in the U.S. and elsewhere, while oil supplies remained high.
At the same time investors sold off gold, silver and other commodities, and looked to the stock market for better returns in the long run. The stock market had a volatile week as many of those investors bought and sold shares, looking to consolidate their positions.
Analysts said relatively low prices for oil and a weaker dollar rekindled interest among buyers.
"Crude oil prices rebounded and climbed higher on Friday ... supported by a weaker U.S. dollar and a strong rebound in the global equity markets and increased risk appetite," said a note from Sucden Financial Research in London. A weaker dollar makes crude cheaper -- and a more attractive investment -- for traders using other currencies.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Seth Jayson]
TearLab (Nasdaq: TEAR ) reported earnings on May 13. Here are the numbers you need to know.
The 10-second takeaway
For the quarter ended March 31 (Q1), TearLab beat expectations on revenues and exceeded expectations on earnings per share. - [By Roberto Pedone]
One potential earnings short-squeeze candidate is in-vitro diagnostic player TearLab (TEAR), which is set to release numbers on Tuesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect TearLab to report revenue of $3.51 million on a loss of 13 cents per share.
This company has managed to top Wall Street estimates two times over the last four quarters, which is a bullish earnings trend. If TearLab can delve another beat, then shares could be setting up for a large move higher.
The current short interest as a percentage of the float for TearLab is extremely high at 37.1%. That means that out of the 25.54 million shares in the tradable float, 8.59 million shares are sold short by the bears. This is a huge short interest on a stock with a very low tradable float. If the bulls get the earnings news they're looking for, then shares of TEAR could easily explode higher post-earnings as the bears jump to cover some of their bets.
From a technical perspective, TEAR is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last six months, with shares moving higher from its low of $5.26 to its recent high of $15.18 a share. During that uptrend, shares of TEAR have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of TEAR within range of triggering a major breakout trade post-earnings.
If you're bullish on TEAR, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $14.28 to its 52-week high at $15.18 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that registers near or above its three-month average action of 942,598 shares. If that breakout hits, then TEAR will set up to enter new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Ben Levisohn]
Weekend news likely prompts a negative reaction Monday, but Tues-Wed could go either way. GM stock could respond well if March share meets/beats expectations and if GM were to make adequate statements explaining concerns and offering remedies (OnStar can play role here). A sub-17% share and/or more negative revelations could pressure the stock further. We enter the week with a buy-on-weakness approach but acknowledge that this latest escalation adds ST market share risk. Thus, we also look to add positions in Buy-rated Ford (F) (possible ST share gains) and [American Axle & Manufacturing (AXL)] (pulled back + Q2 schedules appear intact).
- [By Ben Levisohn]
This week wee awaiting a court decision on whether GM might be ordered to issue a ark itorder for recalled vehicles awaiting an ignition fix. A negative ruling would mark another escalation. A more positive headline could emerge in late-Apr/early-May if GM were to take further steps to address impacted customers (i.e. fund). The headlines stemming from GM internal investigation are less predictable but also present a risk. Separately, if GM normalizes ATPs, some press reports may report it negatively as wee seen all year. Tactically, our prior buy-on-weakness approach for GM, Ford and [American Axle & Manufacturing (AXL)] appeared to work last week and this remains our strategy as the situation unfolds.
