NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Earnings should be a key driver of any fundamental valuation. This week, a large number of companies will be releasing their quarterly earnings results. Here are three companies found to be undervalued by the ModernGraham valuation model and suitable for either the defensive investor (one who is not willing to undertake substantial research) or the enterprising investor (one who is willing to undertake substantial research).
Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) is set to release its earnings premarket Thursday, and according to its latest ModernGraham valuation, the company does not pass the requirements of the defensive investor, as it has not consistently paid dividends over the last 10 years, and it has not shown earnings stability over the last 10 years. But it does pass the requirements of the enterprising investor, though it has a higher level of debt relative to current assets than the investor type likes to see.
From a valuation perspective, the ModernGraham valuation is affected significantly by the large earnings loss in 2008, which has caused the EPSmg (normalized earnings) -- EPSmg is a 5 year weighted average of the annual earnings per share figures -- figure for 2009 to be very low in relation to 2013. As it stands, the EPSmg have grown from a loss of $1.67 to a gain of $3.48, indicating a high level of growth that would appear to significantly outpace the market's implied estimate of 0.45% earnings growth. This has led the model to return an intrinsic value estimate that is well above the market price, and the overall result that the company is undervalued is supported by the valuation based on only 3% growth. If the company can demonstrate earnings greater than cents for the first quarter, this valuation should be even better.

In august, the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) published the mid-year review for the agricultural sector. Their findings point to a slowdown for the industry, highlighting a 9.5% decline on exports through the first half of 2013. Also, late soybean planting in the USA is expected to compound the industry slowdown. So, what are the prospects for AGCO (AGCO), CNH Global (CNH), and Deere & Co. (DE) under such conditions?

Golden Star Resources (NYSEMKT: GSS )
It's simple physics: The bigger they are, the harder they fall. When gold prices nosedived earlier this week, gold miners with historically higher operating costs took the brunt of the hit. For the most part, that meant that development-stage miners, and those operating in Africa, where labor and political costs make cost-effective mining a challenge, took it on the chin. Possibly no stock was hammered more than Golden Star Resources, a gold miner in Ghana, which lost about one-quarter of its value on Monday alone. - [By Patricio Kehoe] some future and gave several reasons for my bearish stance towards the stock. A small market, high geopolitical risk in some of the countries the firm operates, along with overexpansion in times of fluctuating gold prices gave tune to the massive shedding of shares by investment gurus. Five months have past since I last considered Golden Star potential, and everything indicates the situation has not changed.
Guru Activity Shows a Clear Tendency
Steven Cohen (Trades, Portfolio), Chuck Royce (Trades, Portfolio) and Arnold Schneider (Trades, Portfolio), had already sold their entire holdings in the company by October 2013, indicating they had little faith in the gold miner recovery. By the end of the year, Jim Simons' (Trades, Portfolio) Renaissance Technologies took a similar decision, reducing its stake in the firm by 32%. This tendency towards the sale of Golden Star stock was duly noted by investors and analysts alike, and concurs with the company poor performance.
A Look at the Numbers
In an industry plagued by fluctuating metal prices, operating with lofty margins can be quite helpful. Yet Golden Star cannot afford such luxuries. With an operating margin of 0.1% and a net margin of -56.8% the firm is in a tight spot, especially when compared to the industry average. Unlike its industry peersmedian, which are of 2.26% and -0.09%, respectively, the Toronto-based gold miner is struggling to generate decent cash flow levels. Further metrics depict a even worse situation for shareholders: return on equity is currently at -370% and revenue growth is estimated to reach a poor 2.5%. Purchasing overpriced assets, relative to current gold prices, is surely one of the reasons for such grim figures, as financial losses have taken their toll on Golden Star.
The announcement of its 2013 full year, and fourth quarter earnings only helped to add to shareholdersconcerns. A 15% decline in revenue was expected by those

One group of stocks not feeling the optimism today: Gold miners. With fewer concerns that a U.S. attack on Syria will be disruptive and more evidence that tapering will begin this month, the price of the precious metal has dropped 1.6% to $1,388.90 an ounce–and gold stocks are falling with it. New Gold (NGD), for one, has dropped 3% to $6.55, while Barrick Gold (ABX) has fallen 1.3% to $19.25.

On an adjusted basis, Eldorado Gold (EGO) has the longest reserve/resource life amongst our coverage companies (39 years) with Goldcorp (GG) having the longest reserve/resource life (23 years) amongst the senior producers versus the group average of 22 years. Kinross Gold (KGC) and Iamgold (IAG) have the shortest adjusted reserve/resource lives amongst the senior and mid-tier producers (18 and 14 years respectively). On a percentage basis, the companies most affected by the adjustment are New Gold (NGD) and Iamgold which both saw reserve/resource lives fall by 47% however, we note that despite the adjustment,New Gold still has the second longest reserve/resource life in our group (37 years). Newmont Mining was the least affected by the adjustments with reserve/resource life declining by only 12% to 22 years from 25 years.

One lustrous investment
If you hadn't guessed by now, I'm a big fan of gold and gold miners. There are multiple factors at the moment that I feel could usher in another rally in gold prices. These include weak global economies, which make gold an attractive safe-haven investment; low domestic interest rates, which make gold attractive relative to low-yielding CDs and bonds; copious U.S. money printing, which could lead to inflation; and a contrarian mentality to buy when others are fearful. That's why I think investors would be foolish to pass up on cost-efficiency mining expert Goldcorp (NYSE: GG ) at its current levels. - [By Doug Ehrman]
More fundamental to the structural shift in the market is that after an extended period of underperformance by gold miners such as Goldcorp (NYSE: GG ) and Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM ) , this phenomenon has reversed for the time being. As of this writing, since the two-day collapse, GLD is up under 7% as compared with a rise of nearly 8.5% for Newmont and a 12.5% surge for Goldcorp. The miners are probably benefiting from the shift toward bullion. If the miners are able to reverse this market preference for gold over gold miners, it could have long-term ramifications for gold in general.

In the longer term, IAMGOLD could potential challenges from higher taxes on some of its holdings. The Canadian province of Quebec is considering changing the current 16% profit tax either to what amounts to a gross revenue tax or to a more progressive profit tax with higher rates on high-margin mining operations. Under current conditions, those taxes might not have much effect either on IAMGOLD or rivals Agnico-Eagle (NYSE: AEM ) and Goldcorp (NYSE: GG ) , both of which also have projects in the province, but it's hard to predict how a changes might affect future results if they take effect.

IAMGOLD Corporation was founded in 1990 and is based in Toronto, Canada.
Advisors' Opinion:- [By Michael Blair]
IAMGOLD (IAG) is one of my favorite gold stocks principally because it is a relatively high cost producer with long lived mines. That paradox arises since high cost producers have the most volatility when gold prices change. If they are operating close to break even, a relatively small rise in gold prices makes them quite profitable. Conversely, when prices fall they bleed all over the floor.
